Those of us who are parents long to see our children develop and grow in healthy ways: emotionally, physically, academically, and also spiritually. We value the children that join us for worship at Holland UCC. During the school year, we have a special time just for our K through 5th graders. The children are invited to join us at the beginning of worship, and then are released for a time of lesson and craft designed just for them. We use the curriculum: A Joyful Path, from Progressive Christianity.
About the curriculum: Through stories and activities, children’s bodies and feelings are engaged as well as their minds. Giving children experiences that are real and meaningful helps them integrate and apply the ideals of Progressive Christianity to their lives right now. Experiential learning also helps to create a solid foundation for a child’s life-long spiritual journey.
This behavior-over-belief curriculum connects children with their own inner wisdom. It teaches interdependence, self awareness, respect for nature, stillness, forgiveness, prayer, meditation, and integrity. Using the Bible and other wisdom stories, A Joyful Path helps children learn how to follow the path of Jesus in today’s world.
UCC Kids Time happens part-way through the service, at which time the kids head just down the hall with two screened volunteers.
For infants and toddlers, we have a dedicated nursery space with two screened volunteers.
Heather Gaughan is our new Kids Time lead teacher. Heather is an Elementary Education student at Hope College.
